Pick Me Up

Out, out, brief candle!
Life’s but a walking shadow,
A poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more:
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
— William Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act V, Scene 5

Last week I was feeling like Macbeth in this final act of Shakespeare’s tragedy. I know all of the tools and tips for getting out of that kind of hole, but none of them were working.

I tried meditating on golden light enveloping me in a warm comforting blanket, bringing me peace. Nope.

Then I tried one of my favorite forms of grounding, eating chocolate. Didn’t work.

I called my sister, but she was busy, and she wasn’t there to help me dig out. Getting nowhere.

I listened to one of my favorite “happy songs” playlists, which almost always works. No dice.

I desperately wanted to get out of the funk, but all of my go-to solutions couldn’t cut it this time. Then I remembered that when my daughters were overwhelmed in middle school with homework, sports, clubs, puberty, and all of those crazy things that can throw anyone into despondency, the only remedy was a phone call from their four-year old cousin. I’d pick them up from practice and after a few failed attempts to help them work through the gloom, we’d call my little nephew.

Misery disappears like a bad dream when a happy child shares their positive energy. It worked like a charm! In fact, it became such a regular occurrence that when my sister would answer the phone after dinner during those years, she would say, “Hi, do you want to talk to Emory?” She knew what we needed without us even asking. Here is a clip that never failed to bring a smile or even a few giggles:

It was even better live on those car rides home from practice. A punchy four-year-old is a joy in and of itself!

Another favorite pick-me-up based on the pure and delightful energy of a child was first introduced to me by my husband, Dave. He came across it while aimlessly scrolling through videos on evening, and it is still one of our very favorite clips or all time.

Its also what pulled me out of that deep funk last week. Not only did it completely change my mood, I actually laughed out loud because I couldn’t help myself. Maliya Kabs is an absolute delight in these videos.

The Kabs family has been all over TikTok and Instagram, and they even have their own youtube channel, so if you ever need a smile or a reason to believe that living on this planet is a miracle filled with joy, follow them and learn to “canta!”

I love them so much and I am so very grateful that they choose to share their fun family moments with the rest of the world!

These times remind me that all of us are lightworkers in one way or another, but that doesn’t mean that our lights don’t need recharging. There are many different ways to recharge - from meditation and prayer to connecting with others to witnessing the divine light in our fellow earth travelers, especially children.

Do you have a favorite pick-me-up that works every time? Have you ever served as a pick-me-up for someone else? Sometimes we need the helping hand and sometimes we are the helping hand.

What I’ve noticed is that after someone else has picked me up, it makes me want to do the same for someone else. Does that ever happen to you?
